Q&A about Water Reuse

1) Is this procedure USDA approved?

Yes, CFR 9 Section 416.2(g)

2) Does the water reuse screen require a CIP system?

No, each plant is different and most do not have a CIP system.
However, for plants without a CIP system we recommend filling the tank with hot water, adding CIP powder or detergent to it, running through the lines, then rinsing thoroughly.

3) How many gallons per minute can the system handle?

The water reuse screen can handle up to 200 GPM per screen and pump.

4) How much maintenance is required?

The screen is built for durability and should only require minimal maintenance such as:
A) Checking the gears for wear or fracture
B) Checking the rollers for needed adjustments
C) Checking gearbox lubricant
D) Checking hose connections for leakage

5) How often does the screen require cleaning?

Mandatory cleaning at end of each shift with a USDA approved detergent and rinsed thoroughly with high-pressured hot water.
It is also highly recommended to clean during line production break-times by removing the side cover and using high pressure water to clean the rotary screen. Then, remove the filter screens one at a time using high pressure water to clean.

6) What about USDA requirements?

A sample SOP is included in the Berry Water Reuse Screen pamphlet. Your QA or HACCP personnel should coordinate with plant IIC on a written program for standards and protocol.

7) What about water sampling & testing?

Again, your QA or HACCP personnel should coordinate with plant IIC to set up a procedure for monitoring water quality, record keeping and any necessary corrective measures.

8) Note:

Each plant location has different setups; therefore the condition of the water to be reused is different at each location. The cleaner the water coming into the screen, the better it works.
